S/3414 Antique 19th Century Whale Bone Fid
A small whale bone fid, having a faceted end and central protruding collar. These were used for splicing ropes and were also made of lignum vitae, oak and teak. Whale bone ones, as in this instance, were often made by sailors on whaling ships and sometimes engraved with whaling scenes. It has a good used finish, colour and patination.
