S/1783 17th Century Walnut Mortar

A fine early 17th century walnut mortar with banded and line ornaments on a short bladed knopped stem and having a high spreading angled base with incised line decoration. An interesting feature is that there is an historic piece of shrapnel embedded in the side opposite a vacant knot hole. The rich colour and patination is excellent, a real collector's item.
