S/2014 Antique Treen 19th Century Mahogany Sailor's Seam Rubber or Liner

A small mahogany sailor's seam rubber or liner, carved with a turks head (knob) terminal and a rope twist body. The blade is panelled on the non working side, which is unusual.

These attractive items were made in various woods and sometimes whale bone or walrus ivory, and were used by sailors or sailmakers for smoothing the seams in canvas, flattening the double line of waxed stitches into the canvas. The whole has a dark rich colour and retains a patination.
