S/2052 Antique Tramp Art Miniature Chest of Drawers

A well carved Tramp Art miniature chest of drawers, the front having four triangular sided drawers fitted with brass knobs and the sides with square panels and protruding centres. The whole is raised on four corner mounted block feet.

American tramp art were items whittled into geometric shapes and other forms, believed to be carved by skilled German or Scandinavian immigrants, from old cedar cigar boxes or produce crates. They travelled the country selling or trading their wares. Often, as in this instance, the drawer linings and base have stencilled writing or decoration from the original article used. It was popular between 1870-1940, then the art form started to decline.

The Chest has a dark rich colour and patination.
