S/2135 Antique Treen 18th Century Sussex Elm Log Bowl

A well used large Sussex elm log bowl, which came in four sizes and were made from sawing across the grain of an elm log, and then turned leaving a concave foot.

A similar example is illustrated in David Levi's book Treen for the Table, plate 11/19 on page 150, and he suggests that they were farmhouse eating bowls.

This is a good example and has the initials VSO carved twice on the base. The whole has a medium colour and retains a patination.
