S/2506 Antique Treen Ash Spanhalter or Kienspanhalter

A good example of an Austrian Spanhalter, which is a similar but a much larger version of the English Rush Nip. The ash conical base, with old worm, supports the blacksmith's made wrought iron nip, with a decorative top and hinged counter balance weight to hold a large splint, which no doubt gave a good illumination for the period of time.

Sold 25¼ in. (64 cm.) High
6 in. (15 cm.) Diameter Austrian Circa 1800
