S/2557 Antique Treen 19th Century Lignum Vitae Go to Bed

A small lignum vitae go to bed, having a well turned body in two sections with a screw thread that reveals an interior for the storage of matches. On the base there is a paper striker to light the match.

These were used in place of candles (which were expensive) and gave you enough light to go to bed. They were also used to melt sealing wax for letters. The Whole retains a patination.
