S/2715 Antique Treen 19th Century Flail

A good example of an English flail used for thrashing corn. They were individually made and were of a weight to suit the user. They had many different names, i.e. nile, drashel stick, a half, joseph and Mary. The staff is usually made of hazel or ash. They have great antiquity and one does not often find them in good condition as in this instance. The whole has a good colour and patination.

Provenance: purchased at the W.J. Shepherd Sale at Sotheby's in 1983.
