S/6115 Antique Treen Carved and Inscribed Swedish Commemorative Burr Wood Bowl
An extremely interesting Swedish burr wood bowl, carved from the solid with an integral open forked handle inscribed Solleftea and dated 1917.
Solleftea, a city in Northern Sweden, is located at the lowest rapids of the Angermanalven, making it the last outpost to which it was possible to sail. It obtained the status of a market town in 1902, before finally being granted a town charter in 1917, therefore making it a city. This fine bowl, no doubt commemorates this important occasion in the town's history.
The base is signed with a name in pencil, probably of the carver, with carved initials E.O. and the number 6 or letter B? It has a wonderful rich pale colour and patination.
