S/6122 Antique Treen 19th Century Circular Swedish Beech Butter Box

A Swedish circular beech butter box, similar to the Isle of Man ones that were called Mealey Begs. The larger ones were for taking butter to market and the smaller ones, as in this instance, were used by fishermen or shepherds. The latter when they were in high pastures in summer, where they would bury the box in peat, scrub or stones to keep it cool. The lid and base have moulded decoration and the whole has an attractive colour, retaining a patination.
