S/476 CATTLE WATERING by WILLIAM SIDNEY COOPER

(1854-1927)

Signed and dated 1898
Watercolour

Watercolour size: 9x13 in./24x33 cm.
Frame size: 17x21 in./44.5x53 cm.

There is slight confusion as to what relation this artist was to Thomas Sidney Cooper, the well known painter who specialised in sheep and cattle scenes. It is suggested that he is either his second son or perhaps his nephew. He was however, the father of Tho-mas George Cooper, also an artist.

He lived in London in 1880 and 1890, Pang-bourne, Berks 1886 and Herne Bay, Kent in 1892. He painted in both oil and water-colour but it is for the latter he is best known; like Thomas Sidney Cooper he specialised in depicting cattle and sheep in their natural surroundings, the soft colours and gentle detail of his pictures have made them extremely popular in recent years. Examples of his works may be seen in the Museums of Reading and Maidstone.
