Alexis de Leeuw was born in Belgium and painted in oils, landscapes, figurative and genre subjects. He specialised in winter views and many of his works show logging scenes with horses, his genre paintings often depict children playing and the quality and subject matter of his works have made his paintings extremely desirable.

It is not recorded when he came to live in London but he firstly exhibited in the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1854, a picture titled "A Winter Scene in Holland" No.228. At the time he was living at 10, Albert Terrace, London Road, Southwark, and during the next 40 years he moved house five times. It is known he returned to Belgium circa 1887, and died in Bruges.
