S/445 George III Mahogany Gainsborough Chair with Alterations

The serpentine shaped top, with an upholstered back and well proportioned seat, is joined by a shaped arm to each side, each partly upholstered and with a curved mahogany support, having a carved scroll with leaf decoration in the traditional design.

The whole, upholstered with a floral fabric, is finished with close nails and is raised on legs with an inside chamfer, the front two with blind fret decoration and all four joined by attractive pierced fret stretchers for strength.

This fine quality chair is fitted with leather castors and is in good condition retaining a patination.

(castors replaced with the arms and blind fret to front legs added at a later date)
