S/659 Early Nineteenth Century Wheel Barometer in a Mahogany Case by S. Bithray, Royal Exchange, London

The top, with a swan neck pediment decorated with ivory paterae, is above a removable bow glazed thermometer. The boldly engraved ten inch silvered dial, within a circular brass bezel, has an ivory setting knob.

The whole, with tulipwood banding, which is outlined with holly and boxwood stringing, is in good condition and retains a patination.

S. Bithray (probably Stephen) was located at North Gate, 29 Royal Exchange, London from 1827-1860 and was noted for his microscopes as well as fine barometers such as this example.
