William Henry Pike lived at 41, Tavistock Place, Plymouth. He painted landscapes and coastal scenes in both oil and watercolour and while living in the West Country his paintings generally depicted views in both Devon and Cornwall.

In 1881, he moved to London and visited Venice, thereafter painting many Venetian scenes. He was made a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1889 and exhibited regularly at the leading London Galleries. Occasionally an artist will rise to great heights while painting a subject dear to their hearts. This work we consider is one of these instances, as having had many of his paintings this is certainly the finest example we have ever seen, painted with great skill and expertise.

Examples of his works may be found at the British Museum and the Royal Albert Museum, Exeter.
