Charles Collins painted in both oil and watercolour and specialised in landscape, rustic, genre and especially farm animals as in this instance. He was the father of George Edward Collins who became an etcher and illustrator. He lived and worked in South London and Dorking and it was in these areas that he found the majority of his subject matter, although it is also recorded he worked in Scotland.

Charles Collins was a prolific artist and he exhibited many times in the London and Provincial Galleries, his paintinags were as popular then, as they are today, this being a good example of his work.
