S/2253 Antique 19th Century Miniature Slate Chest of Drawers

A delightful miniature chest of drawers in two sections made from slate, with dummy drawers fitted with small brass knob handles and inscribed slate stone Festionog.

Miniature chests, bureaus and similar pieces of folk art were carved by quarrymen of North Wales and most date from the late 19th century. It is rare to find pieces with carved inscriptions.

Comparative literature: Peoples Art by Emmanuel Cooper, Maninstream Publishing 1994.

As is often found with slate carving, there are some small losses, but this is not unusual and often does not detract from the item, if anything it gives an idea as to how difficult it is to work with slate. By its very nature it easily chips and cracks.
