S/2531 Antique 19th Century Baleen Seal Braker

A fine quality and rare 19th century baleen (whale bone) seal braker, for opening letters that have sealing wax. It is beautifully carved depicting a sea serpent with a scaly body, an open mouth and two rows of teeth clutching a ball. The white metal rectangular platform for braking the seal, is attached with a decorative collar to the tail. The whole has a dark rich colour and fine patination.
