S/2872 Antique Treen 19th Century Birds Eye Maple Pocket Snuff Box

A finely pressed and carved circular birds eye maple pocket snuff box, having a fitted lid depicting a seated fox with a bushy tail, a house, flowers and bunch of grapes. This Depicts a scene from Aesops Fables, numbered 15, 'this fox has a longing for grapes: he jumps,but the bunch still escapes. So he goes away sour; and, 'tis said, to this hour declares that he's no taste for grapes,' hence the saying sour grapes. The sides are also carved and the base is carved with a flowering shrub. The whole has a lovely pale honey colour and good patination.
