S/3696 Antique Treen 18th Century Sussex Elm Log Bowl

A medium sized well used 18th century Sussex elm log bowl, they came in four sizes and were made from sawing across the grain of an elm log, and then turned leaving a stepped foot.

A similar example is illustrated in David Levi's book Treen for the Table, plate 11/19 on page 150, and he suggests that they were farmhouse eating bowls.

The whole has a most attractive colour and patination.
