S/3726 Antique Treen 19th Century Coquilla Nut Figurative Snuff Box
A rare early 19th century coquilla nut figurative snuff box, depicting a portly gentleman with both hands in his pockets in a full length buttoned coat. The back is hinged to expose a receptacle for the snuff. The whole has a lovely rich colour and excellent patination. The feet and base are replaced.
Coquillas are the nuts of the Attelea Funifera, a palm known in Brazil as the Piassaba. The trees thrive in the swampy ground on the eastern side of South America.
