Andrew Nicholl was born in Belfast in 1804 the son of a Bootmaker. He studied Art in London and then worked in Dublin where he Exhibited in 1832 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy, becoming a full member in 1860.

In 1840 he came to London . In 1849 he went to Colombo, Ceylon as a teacher of Painting and Drawing at the Academy. After living in London, Belfast and Dublin he finally settled in London and some of his drawings were engraved and lithographed.

Well known for his paintings of wild flowers often with a landscape beyond. The technique - colour tone and composition leads us to believe that this view belongs to the period that he produced many landscapes and coastal views in Ireland.

Andrew Nicholl exhibited many works in the London Galleries and the Royal Hibernian Academy between 1832 and 1866 the year of his death.
