S/4111 Antique Folk Art 18th Century Straw Work Box

A rare and extremely interesting 18th century French straw work box, having a lid with four decorative spandrels and in the centre a circular panel depicting two fishermen with a net in front of a rocky outcrop, with a town in the far distance. The underside of the lid depicts a man and woman in a leafy bower, all done with coloured and engraved straw work strips. The whole is laid on a cardboard frame with a pine base. It is amazing that it has survived so well, owing to the delicate nature of its construction. There is however some minor damage in the rocky outcrop, the net and on two small corners of the lid.
