S/4138 Antique Treen Scottish Laburnum Apothecary's Mortar of the Queen Anne Period
A rare Scottish well used Queen Anne Period pedestal based laburnum wood apothecary's mortar, having a tapered interior with a small rounded base. It has an overlapping rim to the cylindrical body, which is ring turned and conforms with the top. The whole is raised on a central support, with a slightly angled circular base and a moulded foot. The underside is deeply recessed with very noticeable pole lathe ring turnings. It is turned from heart and sap wood and has a few historic shrinkage cracks, commensurate with its age. The whole has a lovely rich two tone colour and excellent patination.
