S/4198 Antique Folk Art Dutch Ale Marriage Bowl

A well used and most interesting folk art Dutch ale marriage bowl, in painted and decorated pine. These bowls are well known for being made in the Dutch town of Hinderloopen.

Hinderloopen is an old town on the North of the Netherlands on the Ijsselmeer. It lies within the municipality of Sudwest Fryslan. It is famous because of the Hinderloopen art and Hinderloopen costume. Hinderloopen is one of the eleven towns of Friesland. It had a population of around 875 in January.

The well worn interior has the remains of painted floral swags. The exterior has a grey concave border, which has a band of writing and is above joined floral swags on a red ground with incised lines below. The bowl is supported on a protruding foot with extensive painted writing and carved initials on the base and dated 1801.
