S/4232 Antique Treen 19th Century Boxwood Pill Silverer

An early 19th century boxwood pill silverer, having a screw thread, with a protruding band, to secure the removable lid. The whole, raised on a concave stem and stepped circular foot, has a rich colour and excellent patination.

These pill silverers were used by apothecaries, having made their pills, they would be moisturised with mucilage of acacia and then put in these containers with a silver leaf, gently rolling the pills within, which would coat them ready for storage in a bottle.
