S/4249 Antique Treen 19th Century Mahogany Rule

An interesting mahogany rule, being a relic from H.M.S. Eurydice, having brass cap ends with engraved details, H.M.S. Eurydice foundered off Isle of Wight March 1878. The Eurydice was a very fast 26 gun Royal Navy Frigate built in 1842 in Portsmouth and converted into a training ship in 1861, and refitted in Portsmouth in 1877. Whilst returning from Bermuda she was caught in a heavy storm off the Isle of Wight on the 24th March and capsized and sank. Only two of the ship's 319 crew survived. She was refloated but was broken up the same year. She was a victim of one of Britain's worst peacetime naval disasters and the phantom ship Eurydice has been sighted frequently by sailors over the years. This mahogany rule was made from her timber, has a good colour and patination and of historical interest.
