S/4503 Antique Treen 19th Century Lignum Vitae Go To Bed

A most unusual three section lignum vitae go to bed in the classical form of a lighthouse, having a carved top made of coquilla nut, that unscrews to reveal a central hole for a small candle. This in turn unscrews from the base to reveal a storage area for candles and matches. The underside has a sand paper surface to strike a match. Go to beds were often found on desk tops and used to light and melt sealing wax for letters. The whole is beautifully made, has a lovely rich colour and is well turned in heart and sap wood, with an excellent patination as often found in lignum vitae items.
