S/4535 Antique Treen Late 17th/Early 18th Century Pine Bird Whistle

A rare late 17th/early 18th century pine bird whistle, having a circular body with carved wings, legs and feet. The head has eyes and a pointed beak and it has the remains of painted decoration simulating feathers all over. The open mouth piece is partially restored with a finger hole above, that makes a noise like a cuckoo or similar bird. It has obviously been well used as shown by the worn finish, and is an extremely tactile item with excellent patination. It is difficult to date, but we feel it is of an early period.
