S/4551 Antique Treen 19th Century Dutch Lignum Vitae Wool Bowl
An interesting Dutch Lignum vitae wool bowl in heart and sap wood, having ring turned decoration. Note the difference to English wool bowls, that are slightly deeper and plain with no decoration. They were made of lignum vitae for their weight, which kept them in a stable position. They were used for placing a ball of wool, and with a smooth interior allowing the wool to unwind when in use without becoming tangled. The whole has an excellent colour, condition and patination.
