S/4555 Antique Treen Early 18th Century Boxwood Book Snuff Box

An excellent early 18th century boxwood snuff box in the form of a book, having a body carved from a single piece of wood and not jointed as in the usual manner. The metal hinged lid is carved with a portrait of a lady holding a flower, while the reverse depicts two carved lions, their mouths open and paws raised, on a chip carved ground. The whole has a good honey colour, as nearly always found with boxwood items, and has excellent patination. It is a serious collector's item.
