S/4827 Antique Treen 19th Century Lignum Vitae Slickenstone or Saddler's Smoother

An early 19th century lignum vitae slickenstone or saddler's smoother of traditional design, made from both heart and sap wood. Slickenstones or linen smoothers were made of china, glass, marble or wood and were used with the cap downwards in a circular sweeping movement for smoothing and to some extent glazing damp linen. Saddler's smoothers were used for smoothing hide. The whole has an excellent colour, grain and patination.
