S/4892 Antique Treen Early 18th Century Dated Cedar Wood and Bone Oval Snuff Box

A fine early 18th century dated cedar wood and bone oval snuff box, having a lid inlaid with a lozenge dated 1704, with four further shaped bone plaques inscribed with a motto, 'To Whom I Lend it is a Friend'. It has an excellent colour and patination and the lid has slight damage to the edge. Similar examples are illustrated in Domestic Utensils of Wood by Owen Evan-Thomas on plate 38 and in the sale catalogue of W. J. Shepherd Collection, Sotheby's 1983, lots 482-3.
