S/5007 Antique Treen 18th Century Pear Wood Stay Busk

A most attractive pear wood stay busk of the George III Period, having initials E.P.S.M. and dated 1779. The shallow triangular front is finely chip carved all over with conforming designs, semi circles, x crosses and horizontal lines, with the rounded top having four incorporated hearts, all within a continuous chip carved border. It has a small loss to one edge with a historic patinated surface. Stay busks were used to fit into a front pocket of a lady's corset, many were plain, but carved ones, as in this instance were tokens of love similar in detail to Welsh love spoons. The whole has a wonderful colour and excellent patination, provided with a hand made metal display stand, which accompanies the item.
