S/5032 Antique Treen 19th Century Figurative Coquilla Nut Snuff Box

A well carved coquilla nut figurative snuff box, depicting a portly gentleman with facial features, glass eyes, nose and mouth, dressed in a full length coat with bone buttons, one hand in this pocket and the other under his coat and standing on protruding feet. The hinged back opens revealing an aperture for snuff. The whole has an excellent rich colour and patination.

Coquillas are the nuts of the Attelea Funifera, a palm known in Brazil as the Piassaba. The trees thrive in the swampy ground on the eastern side of South America.
