S/5334 Antique Folk Art Splintwork Rattle of the Georgian Period

An extremely fine example of craftsmanship called splintwork, which consists of fitting together, in this instance, a complex arrangement of 16 square splints, often associated with the North East part of England. The rattle somehow has been put into the interior, so that it rattles quite loudly. The shaped ring turned handle is finely executed and has a small inset bone finial at the end. It is a rare and serious collector's item of folk art, and has a pleasing medium colour and good patination.
