S/5300 Antique Treen 19th Century Boxwood Mandolin

A hand held boxwood mandolin, having a flat steel removable blade for slicing cucumbers etc. The shaped handle is inscribed Groves and Sons, Sheffield. Groves was established in 1770 at Snow Hill, Sheffield and was a thoroughbred steel refiner and producer of edged tools. 'And Sons' is thought to be in use at least after 1822 and became their corporate mark granted by the cutlers company. The whole retains a patination.
