S/5382 Antique Treen 18th Century Norwegian Burr Wood Snuff Bottle or Flask

An excellent quality Norwegian 18th century burr birch snuff bottle, having silver mounts (unhallmarked) that are decorated with a chased design, with the foot forming a seal bearing the initials W.H.S. The fitted silver stopper is attached by a linked chain, with a further one having a screw thread. The whole is of museum quality and is an exceptional piece of treen, with an excellent rich colour and patination. An almost identical piece is illustrated in Domestic Utensils of Wood by Owen Evan-Thomas on page 160, plate 62.
