S/5900 Antique Treen 18th Century Ash Butter Hood

An extremely rare Welsh ash butter hood, of inverted bowl form and having a raised knob handle. The whole has an excellent rich colour, grain and natural patination.

Covers for food are sometimes called hoods and used for covering butter, cheese or plates of food, to protect them from flies and insects. The larger shallow ones are sometimes confused with milk or cream skimmers, see stock number 4054, which are saucer shaped and do not have handles.
