S/5980 Antique Treen Mid 18th Century Carved Beech Friesland Mangle Board

A fine beech Friesland mangle board, extensively carved with flower heads, roundels and many assorted designs. It has three horizontal panels, which separate the roundels, that have carved lettering YANYANSSPY, ENGELHERIS and the bottom one is dated ANNO 1760.

Friesland is in the North East part of the Netherlands and has much less forest than Norway and Sweden, hence their mangle boards are mostly only half inch to five eighths thick, slightly convex and about four and half inches wide, not usually painted and have no handles, but are normally pierced near the top for hanging purposes, as in this instance. This is an extremely good example and has a good colour and patination.
