Little Brown Shoots

10.01.2014

Welcome to my first blog since our new and comprehensive website went on line.  My business, dealing with Georgian and Regency furniture, Known as ‘brown furniture’, has been extremely difficult during the last five years and although we continued buying and selling during this period it was obvious to us that there are still many people who admired the workmanship, quality and usefulness of 18th and 19th century English furniture.  Prices gradually headed downwards, due partly to many adverse comments and articles in magazines and newspapers.  We followed the trend and bought and sold many items at far reduced prices from the heights reached in the last decade.  The interest in period furniture also diminished, not helped by the stagnant housing market.

Like the stock market, the time to buy is when the rest are selling.  Prices then make one sit up and take notice.  We believe this is now beginning to happen and during the last three months we have had more positive interest and therefore sales.  There is definitely a more optimistic mood about and people are beginning to move house, which is always a positive sign in our business.  One of the most important things, is that prices are so attractive at the moment and that they should only go up.  Once this catches on, we are certain that business and sales will continue to improve in 2014.

Quality, condition, patination and originality are the most important things to look for when purchasing antiques and as a BADA member, we are proud to say that our stock  upholds that discipline.  Our website is updated every week and after a short period sold items will be moved to archive for future reference.  We have an interesting selection of smaller and unusual items under the heading of miscellaneous, which is always worth a visit and now we have some pictures added with more to follow soon.  Do not forget one can follow us on twitter on jcollinsantique .

In closing I wish you all a prosperous and trouble free 2014 and look forward to welcoming you to our gallery when passing in the area.
